Returning Home
The lights in the arena go out as the flashbulbs of cameras pop and shine. The crowd is buzzing as it's yet unsure as who may be coming. A video starts to play on the BlazenTron of a man walking down the streets of Columbus at night. The man's face is hidden by a hood as a piano plays softly to the clip. He walks past various recognizable places; the Short North, Skully's Diner, the Greater Columbus Convention Center. The man stops at the corner of High Street and Nationwide Blvd, turning towards the front entrance of Nationwide Arena. The spotlight shines bright high atop the arena as he walks through the plaza out front.
All of the lights (all of the lights)
(Lights, lights)
All of the lights (all of the lights)
The piano stops playing as trumpets and fanfare start to fill the arena as "All of the Lights" by Kanye West starts to play. The words to the song flash on the screen with still images of the hooded man in various places around the world. The crowd has jumped to their feet in cheers as they know exactly who is coming out to the "mega" entrance.
Turn up the lights in here baby
extra bright, I want y'all to see this
turn up the lights in here, baby
you know what I need
want you to see everything
Want you to see all of the lights
The music and video abruptly stops and the arena go black for a split second before "GO!" echoes and "In Fate's Hands" by the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus begins to play, the crowd explodes into a thunderous applause. Three spotlights shine and revolve around as if searching for someone, and the fans are on their feet, cheering in anticipation for the hero they know is coming. At the ten mark when the song rocks into life, red, white and blue pyros shoot outward with controlled chaos from the entrance stage for seven straight seconds. By the end of it, the three spotlights have aimed at the stage and await the arrival of a great fan favorite and tonight, hometown hero.
I remember a year ago
I was standing in the crowd
Waiting for my chance to break through
My chance to live again
At last the 'marVel' Gabe Shelley comes out in the midst of these lyrics from behind the curtain, the fans' cheers only growing louder, and he steps up to the spotlight. He dons his hooded vest and points out to the fans. He lifts his hood up slightly to get a view of the fans, his face peaking out. In this hype, he plays to the fans with a smile and they highly respond to him and the lyrics. He takes a moment at the top of the ramp to soak in the cheers, buzz, and the electricity that fills the arena.
Now it seems I've found some friends who
Finally understand what it takes
To make this dream come true
We'll be here 'til the end
Shake it! Break it! Get off your feet!
Come dance with me and don't you fake it
Shake it! Break it! Get off your feet!
Come dance with me and don't you fake it
The fans are positively crazy about Gabe. He slides his vest open ever so slightly to reveal the BWF World Heavyweight Championship and a Columbus Blue Jackets shirt before he makes his way down the ramp. As he begins to walk a few streamers fall from the rafters of the arena and confetti shoots out of the Blue Jackets goal canon. He begins tagging several hands along the way before he climbs up the ring steps. He looks around one more time from his hood as he jumps up and over the ropes and spins around. Gabe picks a corner and easily jumps to the second ropes and bows down.
He throws his hood back and his arms out with a smile on his face. He unsnaps the title from his waist and holds it up to the fans while he points outwards to the crowd. He jumps backwards, spinning and landing on his feet before pointing to another corner and jogging over to it before jumping back up onto the second rope and he plays to the other side of the crowd. He gives another jump and spin before taking a step forward. He draws to the center of the ring and throws his hands out; the crowd's roar of cheers only grow louder and flashes from cameras capture photos of the marVel in all his glory.
Oh, wish I could thank you all for what you have done
And all of the things that you have shared with me.
Oh, wish I could take you all too where I must go wish I could take you all.
I'll take you with my heart.
Gabe's music starts to die down as chants of "Shelley, Shelley" fill the arena. He soaks in the cheers from his hometown crowd. He pulls his vest off and tosses it into the crowd as a token of his appreciation. He calls for a microphone as one is tossed to him and he tries to call for quiet. He puts his lips up to the microphone and lowers his voice.
Gabe Shelley: CCCCCCCOOOOOLUMBUS!!! It's a celebration!
He draws the "cheap" hometown pop as he calls for the fans, a big grin on his face. He quickly tries to quiet them down and motions for silence.
Gabe Shelley: It really does feel good to be home. When I was told that we'd be here the week after No Asylum I knew in my heart of hearts that I would be standing in front of all of you, the BWF World Heavyweight Champion. When given the chance to come out here and open the show I had to jump at it and say that tonight is going to start a new journey for myself. I have been given the chance to come out and thank the town that I have called home for most of my life. The chance to stand in front of the amazing people of Columbus and say I HAVE achieved the dream of being BWF World Heavyweight Champion that I promised you I one day would be. Thank you.
Gabe seems to clear his throat as he starts to get choked up as the fans give him a standing ovation. He lays the title down on the mat and runs his fingers through his hair as he shakes it off.
Gabe Shelley: With that said, I've been criticized this week because I don't seem to care about the "big picture" and wanting to be the AoWF Champion, honestly, I could care less about that. I've voiced my displeasure in how the AoWF runs things and that isn't going to change because some masked merc cries about it. When I came to the BWF, I came to the BWF, not AoWF. I came to compete for THESE fans.
The crowd cheers as Gabe points out to them and then to the BWF logo.
Gabe Shelley: For the BWF fan, not some inter-fed. As far as I'm concerned I could never be a part of ANY sanctioned AoWF match and I won't give a damn. Now of course I have the goal of keeping this title around my waist for a very, very long time. We're talking longer than Danny Allen's first title run of 182 days. Go big or go home, right?
The fans seem to agree with their local hero with a round of applause.
Gabe Shelley: As I do that however, I have one goal that I believe keeps me from finishing my journey. You see that is one more thing here in BWF that I would do anything to have. One more achievement that I would love to add to my career.... The BWF Hall of Fame. I want my name enshrined with the other classes of superstars that have graced the BWF ring. Ghost, Jamal Mystic, Bam, Danny Allen, Hensley, TCH, Mark Sommers, Cody Clark, Adriana, Tim Murphy, X, Eliminator, Anthony Johns, Captain Marticus, and Mark McNasty. There is a rumor that WrestleFest will take place in July this year and that's when BWF has recognized it's Hall of Famers and I plan on being there.
He reaches down and picks his title off the mat and puts it over his shoulder.
Gabe Shelley: To get there I will do everything in my power to show Blazenwing and the rest of the decision makers that I deserve it... I started that with retaining this title at No Asylum and I'll continue to defend it. And then there is my next goal... the BWF Tag Team Championships. I don't care if I have to win those titles myself or if someone wants to come along for the ride. Ms. Strader, I know you're a tag team specialist and if you want to get some more gold here's your chance. If someone out there that doesn't have a job wants to sign with BWF to make a run at the Tag Titles, so be it. I don't care who you are; Johnny Maverick just quit his job in PWA, I hear Rayn is looking for a job, Camisado wants to get some gold, or anyone backstage, it doesn't matter to me. Tell Blazenwing to shine up the tag belts because I'm coming for them.
The fans back the World Champion in his declaration to win another set of titles.
Gabe Shelley: With winning the Tag Titles I'll have held every active BWF Championship and even some inactive. More importantly, it's one more thing to show all the doubters that I am still the face of this company, that I am more than able to go in this ring every night, and that I am one of the best superstars to ever step foot in this ring.
This is defiantly something the fans like to hear as they clap for him as he makes his way to the ropes, stopping and turning around.
Gabe Shelley: This is our journey, Columbus and BWF fans everywhere. Go tell them to marvel at greatness... Oh, and one more thing I've always wanted to do... O-H!
The crowd returns with a thunderous "I-O!" and Gabe ducks out of the ring as his music begins to play. As we fade to commercial he signs a few autographs at ringside.
Jacob Collins vs. Xander Strife
This match was over before it started. Xander never got out of the gate, his ring rust impeding him greatly. Jacob had 90% of the offense in the match, and although Xander got a few decent shots in, he was no match for the younger, faster, hungrier Collins, who set himself back on the path to the BWF World Championship with a Three-Seconds-Flat (Styles Clash) for a quick 1, 2, 3 at the 4:09 mark.
WINNER: Jacob Collins, via pinfall
Shelley's Next Challenger
The camera moves backstage, where we see BWF C.E.O. and Owner (and new PWA Intercontinental Champion!) David Blazenwing standing by in the Co-Commissioner's office. James Reilly and Icetank are both there, and are listening to what the C.E.O. has to say.
David Blazenwing: So, there you go. That's my thoughts on Gabe's next challenger. What do you guys think?
James Reilly: I don't think I like the idea of some guy who's never had a single BWF match coming in and immediately getting a title match.
Icetank: Hard as it is to believe, I agree with pumpkin head over here. Why should this guy of yours get the title shot without earning it?
James glares at Icetank for his comment, while DB shrugs.
David Blazenwing: Consider it... a favor. Besides, the guy can go, and the BWF is short on guys who can make an impact. Gabe needs to be challenged. Masakazu, Collins, they had their shot and lost. Now, it's time for new blood to step in and take a crack at it. That's just my opinion.
Icetank shrugs.
Icetank: Why are you even asking us, then? It sounds to me like your mind is already made up.
Icetank shakes his head, then walks out of the Co-Commssioner's office. James considers saying something, then just shakes his head as well and follows Icetank out. The camera zooms in on a concerned Blazenwing.
David Blazenwing: Damn. I really thought they'd like the idea. Oh well. My company, my rules. They can deal with it!
David smirks, then heads out of the office as the camera cuts back to the ring.
TAG TEAM MATCH
Arnold Hawk & Camisado vs. Joshua Danielson & Gary Maverick
Arnold Hawk and Gary Maverick start the match off. Although he does stumble quite a bit, Hawk impresses as he manages to catch Gary with a couple of big moves, including his Neckbreaker ("Best in the damn business!") for a close two count. Eventually, Gary tags out to Danielson, and although he's doing quite well, Camisado gets frustrated at Hawk and tags himself in. As the referee tries to explain to Arnold what happened (with the blind tag... no pun intended) Camisado tries to DDT Danielson, only for Danielson to low blow Camisado before running to the ropes and nailing his Death Sentence (Sliding D) for the three count and the win!
WINNERS: Joshua Danielson & Gary Maverick, via pinfall
As Danielson and Gary celebrate, Camisado comes to and frustrated, goes after Hawk. He punches Hawk several times as the crowd boos, then sets him up for his STPR [Something That Produces Results] (Spinning Headlock Elbow Drop), but before he can hit it, Danielson re-enters the ring and clocks Camisado from behind! He stomps the hell out of Cam before heading to the top rope and nailing his Juggalo Stomp (Moonsault Double Stomp off the top rope)! The crowd cheers loudly as Camisado rolls out of the ring and Danielson helps Hawk to his feet, holding up his arms and explaining what's going on. Arnold thanks him, and then Danielson helps Hawk out of the ring as the show cuts to commercial.
The Door
The lights in the arena go out and "Better Off Dead" by Death From Above 1979 cues up. A viridian hue falls over the crowd and pyro explodes in sequence up the ramp to the top where multiple sets go off fanning out to the sides. Finale and Ramona Holiday appear at the top of the ramp, Finale displaying the BWF United States Championship over his shoulder. He is wearing a black v-neck t-shirt and blue skinny Levis. The two walk down the ramp and we see that Ramona isn't wearing shoes. She is, although, looking quite stunning in a violet summer dress.
The duo make their way down the ramp, earning a mixed reaction from the fans in attendance. Finale takes the belt off of his shoulder and slides into the ring as Ramona walks up the ring steps with elegant grace. He sits on the second rope and holds it open for her. She enters the ring and is handed a microphone by Scott Benjamin. She hands it to Finale as he adjusts the title on his shoulder.
Finale: "I feel kind of like a dick."
The strange opening comment from the new United States Champion baffles most in the audience. Ramona stands beside him with a devilish look in her eyes, staring out into the crowd.
Finale: "I mean, I just showed up in BWF, broke Cody Clark's arm and laid claim to the United States Championship without even bothering to introduce myself and my companion."
He steps aside from Ramona and looks at her, he holds out his hand as if presenting the latest model sedan.
Finale: "This is the most graceful, most violent woman to ever step into a wrestling ring, Ramona Holiday. And me?"
Ramona confidently snatches the microphone from the champion. He smiles and steps aside.
Ramona Holiday: "He is the United States Champion, The Buffalo Butcher, The Venom Spitting Submission Machine...Finale."
Her voice has a low elegance and her fading British accent adds to her appeal. She slaps Finale on the chest playfully and gives the microphone back.
Finale: "There. Now you know us and we know you. You best believe we know you. We know that each and every one of you came here to see some action tonight but how many of you came here to see, say... BWF World Champion, Gabe Shelley?"
The crowd explodes at the mention of The Marvel. A few pro-Shelley chants break out but die as Finale motions to continue.
Finale: "That's great, how wonderful. He's an entertaining fellow, a champion with serious heart and determination. I'd love to tell you I am the same kind of man he is, but I'm not. I'd also actually enjoy telling you that I am the exact opposite of him. However I am in the middle. I'm not a role model and yet I'm not a completely dishonest criminal. I fall in that beautiful gray area."
He pauses for a moment to clear his throat as Ramona slowly and subtly dances around the ring.
Finale: "But tonight isn't about character, really. Not when you're facing a man like Mark Zout. The guy is a fucking stain, let's face it. They come up a lot in this profession but luckily I know how remove them from the white t-shirt that is BWF. Tonight I plan on upholding my flawless reputation."
Finale looks intently into the camera.
Finale: "The Renegade Souljah is a fucking pit stop on this Hall of Fame Road trip. You think no selling me via your iPhone says a god damn thing about our match? It shows that you are a lazy, unmotivated slice of shit, Zout. Tonight you're done with BWF and I'm the door that kicks you in the ass. I'll take great pride in doing it too. Suck one."
"Better Off Dead" by Death From Above 1979 cues up and Havok cuts to a commercial.
BWF UNITED STATES CHAMPIONSHIP
Mark Zout vs. Finale ©
This match was all about Finale wanting to show he could seriously out-wrestle Zout, and he made a resounding point. Finale was on the defensive for most of the match, mainly counter wrestling, reversing everything he possibly could as a way of embarrassing and messing with his opponent, notably countering Zout's Pike Place (Legsweep DDT) into his own Buffalo '66 (Heel Hook).
Once Zout became visibly frustrated, Finale hit his Berserker (Combination of spinning back fists, quick kicks and uppercuts. Finished off with a massive knee to the chin. All done very quickly.), completely throwing Zout off of his game, then moments later, followed it up with his Maximum Powerbomb (Heavy Powerbomb - any type of set up but the main point is that he drops the opponent right on their neck) chained into the Tiger Blood (Cattle Mutilation) for the submission victory.
WINNER AND STILL UNITED STATES CHAMPION: Finale, via submission
After the match, Finale tosses Zout out of the ring and out of BWF before raising his United States Title high in the air, making another big statement as the show cuts to commercial.
TAG TEAM MATCH
Gabe Shelley & Meghan Nash Strader vs. Masakazu & Tao
A hard fought match between two amazing teams. Tao and Shelley, re-energized from his No Asylum victory, went toe to toe, with each man scoring several near falls. Likewise, Strader and Masakazu each did their fair share of the load for their team, coming close to victory on several occasions. The ending of the match came when Meghan tagged out to Gabe, then rolled out of the ring and pulled Tao off the apron before Masakazu could tag him back in! With Masakazu worn and no partner to tag out to, Gabe was quick to catch Masakazu with his Foreshadowing (Styles Clash) for the hard-earned three count and the victory at just over the 22 minute mark.
WINNERS: Gabe Shelley & Meghan Nash Strader, via pinfall
After the match ended, Meghan and Tao fought each other up the ramp and back through the curtain. The hometown crowd cheered on their World Champion, but their cheers quickly turned to cries of horror as a man in a hooded sweatshirt jumped the barricade and laid Shelley out from behind! The crowds boos were deafening as the man lifted Gabe up, hoisted him into the air, then dropped him hard with a Vertical Drop Brainbuster DDT! The boos grew even louder as the man pulled his hood back to reveal his identity... Alexander O'Ryan, the former PWA Grizzly Beer Champion known as Xan Vaxman!
As O'Ryan stares down at Gabe's near-unconscious body, David Blazenwing walks out onto the stage and makes a startling announcement:
David Blazenwing: Gabe, nothing personal... but allow me to introduce you to the new #1 Contender to the BWF World Championship... Alexander O'Ryan!!!
The crowd continues booing loudly and even begins to throw garbage into the ring as O'Ryan motions for the Championship around his waist, still staring down at Shelley's body as Havok fades to the BWF logo, then to black.
